Air New Zealand to Weigh Passengers Before Boarding
Air New Zealand recently announced that it will be conducting a passenger weight survey on more than 10,000 customers traveling on its international network this June.
The survey is a crucial requirement by the Civil Aviation Authority and is aimed at ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft.
According to Alastair James, Air New Zealand’s Load Control Improvement Specialist, the pilot needs to have accurate information regarding the weight and balance of the loaded aircraft before each take-off.
“We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft – from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold. For customers, crew, and cabin bags, we use average weights, which we obtain from conducting this survey,” James explained.
While customers on Air New Zealand’s domestic network were weighed in 2021, the resumption of international travel has prompted the airline to extend the survey to international flyers as well.
To address any concerns customers may have about the process, James assured them that their privacy is a top priority.
“We know stepping on the scales can be daunting. We want to reassure our customers that there is no visible display anywhere. No one can see your weight – not even us! It’s completely anonymous,” he said.
The survey will be conducted at the entrance to the gate lounge of selected Air New Zealand flights departing from Auckland International Airport until July 2. The airline encourages customers to view this voluntary initiative as a way to contribute to the overall safety and efficiency of their travel experience.
Air New Zealand’s story started in 1940. Known for its warm Kiwi hospitality, today, the airline has 104 operating aircrafts flying more than 17 million passengers every year, with 3,400 flights per week.
